Our Design Of The Month for February 2026, made of 100% organic cotton, and supporting grassroots labour unions in South Asia.
The design for February 2026 celebrates the women-led Barcelona Bread Riots of 1789. That year, on 28 February, the Government in Barcelona published the edict by which the price of bread was to be increased. That same day, women began to demonstrate from Pla de la Boqueria to the square of Sant Agustí, robbing bread stalls along the way. Upon arrival, they set fire to the municipal oven building, where bread was made for the entire city. From there, things escalated fast and on the next day some eight thousand people participated in riots that demanded the reduction of the price of basic necessities such as: bread, meat, wine, and oil, as well as the removal of the captain general, Francisco González de Bassecourt. Crowds occupied the streets and surrounded the institutions of the Palace of the Captain General and the Cathedral. The reaction of the local authorities was forceful and many were arrested for their role in the demonstrations. Josefa Vilaret, mother of two children and known as the 'Negreta', was hanged along with five men, accused of having participated in the riots. The local population refused to attend the public execution of the six, in a gesture of disagreement with the sentences.
